Set in British India in the early 1920s, the story follows British schoolmistress Adela Quested as she visits India to meet her fiancé, Englishman Ronny Heaslop. Adela meets a variety of people, including the Indian doctor Aziz, and must find and face truth amidst the turmoil of racial prejudice and societal pressure.
