General Description

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight comes from a fourteenth-century poem about bravery, mystery, and virtue. On New Year’s Day, Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur’s court, begins a game with the mysterious Green Knight: Gawain will deliver a blow to the Knight, on the condition that Gawain will take a blow from the Knight in a year and a day’s time. Gawain delivers his blow, and a year later, journeys to find the Knight and take the return blow. However, before he reaches the Knight, Gawain is tested and challenged in ways he never expected. This Middle English tale provides plenty of opportunity both for discussion and literary analysis.
