Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter asks questions about judgement, society, forgiveness, and freedom. The book begins with Hester Prynne, a woman in a seventeenth century Puritan colony who has committed adultery. From the opening scene where Hester is publicly shamed, the story presents multiple characters who each struggle with sin and guilt in a different way. The characters' responses will prompt discussion about what we choose to do with our freedom.
